PLEASE NOTE: THIS COURSE IS IN TWO PARTS. ATTENDANCE AT BOTH IS REQUIRED. Part 1 is on Thursday 7th November 2019 and Part 2 on Thursday 14th November 2019.

When you first become a school governor you may feel that there is a mountain of information about the job. This two-part course is designed to give new governors the essential information that they need to do the job effectively.

Description

This course is built around the core functions of the governing body, the responsibilities of school governors and the part that governors play in helping their schools to raise standards of educational achievement. The course covers:

  • the role of the individual governor and strategic corporate governance
  • the school system and the role of governing bodies in academies and maintained schools including federations and multi-academy trusts (MATs)
  • the core functions of a governing body
  • the key roles and legal responsibilities of the governing body
  • the different and complementary roles of governors and head teachers
  • the links between school self evaluation, school improvement planning and performance management
  • the characteristics of effective governing bodies
  • governing body self evaluation
  • Ofsted – the new framework from September 2019
  • how to participate effectively as a governor in the life of the school
  • getting to grips with education jargon

Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will understand the role and responsibilities of the governing body.

If you have already attended a governing body meeting the course will help you to “fit it all together” so that you understand the job and what you are expected to do as a governor - and if you are brand new, it will help you to understand your first (and subsequent) meetings.

Audience

This course is suitable for new governors, but will also benefit governors who didn't get round to attending an induction course when first elected/appointed.
